India: Revised Call rates and data charges

With Mobile Number Portability just around the corner, competition between different telecom carriers are turning to all time high. Call rates have fallen so low that certain carriers have reached rock bottom at offering 0 charge calls as well! Unfortunately, the revised Vodafone rates are currently available only in Kerala sector (There is no news as of now that they will offer the same in other sectors).

Vodafone has two packs, viz. Rs. 95/- and Rs. 14/-. Both are available for customers only in the Kerala circle. Availing the above offers, customers can make use of various features like surfing the internet, using search engines, streaming of online videos, e-mail, accessing accounts on various social networking sites like Orkut, Facebook, Twitter etc. With the recharge of Rs. 95/- users are given unlimited data transfer, while the Rs. 14/- coupon allows users to have data transfer of up to 200 MB. The former has a validity of 30 days and the latter has a validity of 3 days.

GSM network is going to get a Virgin addition

Virgin Mobile, the youth brand of India has lentered into the Indian GSM network starting with Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Orissa. Reportedly, it will be rolling its services across India within 3 months time. The rates for Virgin’s GSM consumers as of now are as follows :

20p/min to STD and local to any Virgin mobile
40p/min to any other local network (Local)
50p/min to any STD


All the above rates are without any packs. The SMS packs are available from Rs 33 onwards which offers 2000 free local and national messages for 30 days.

India: Mobile Number Portability

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is to be rolled out in India starting from December 31st. MNP is the service that allows you to  to select any network without changing their numbers. Indian mobile service providers will implement this facility from December31, 2009 in metro cities(Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai & Chennai) and ‘Circle A ‘service areas and by March 2010 onwards, in other parts of the country.

MNP would increase competitivity amongst our telephony service providers since they have to take into account the risk of customers migrating to other companies.

The Maximum price in rupees for making use of MNP is INR 19. You will also need to get a written consent from your current service provider.

Nokia 3120 Classic

Mobile phone company giant, Nokia, has announced the newest addition to their line of handsets, the Nokia 3120 Classic. The Nokia 3120 Classic is a stripped down model with basic functionalities. This includes 3G capability, web browsing, email, and music download. The Nokia 3120 Classic features a tactile 2-inch QVGA display, 2-megapixel camera, music player with 4GB memory, and a range of colors: plum/powder white, chestnut brown, deep red, and graphite.
Nokia has announced its newest 3G handset, the 3120 Classic. This small candybar handset is based on the S40 user interface, and features an advanced music player and active standby screen. The 3120 Classic has a built-in 2 megapixel camera as well as a secondary front-facing VGA camera for video calling (where supported).
The 3120 Classic sports an integrated FM radio and a 2.5mm headphone port, as well as a microSD card slot and MP3 player. The 2.0" QVGA display is capable of rendering up to 16 million colors, and should make browsing the mobile web a pleasure. Connectivity comes via quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and dual-band WCDMA. Nokia's bluetooth BH 703 Headset - go handsfree!

There ain't much to say about the BH 703 headset but the one thing that has got me hooked(besides the ear-hook) is the contemporary looks and the miniature size of this baby. The black with chrome lining gives it a Nokia Nseries themed look that goes very well with my N78 (WOM World/Nokia) and N95 classic. Then we have 2 pairs of changeable ear-plugs that'll help you get the perfect fit for your ears whether big or small.Personally I would have preferred some custom covers or something as well, b'cuz some of my pals who tried the device were'nt amused by the design.

On the performance front this headset is indeed a winner albeit a slight reduction in loudness. The voice through the headset was crystal clear but it did seem a bit low than what you're accustomed to through the phones earphone. Guess nothing's perfect!

iPhone coming to india?!

Vodafone's just got a tiny, minor, insignificant announcement to make this morning: it's signed with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten markets, including Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy (so much for Telecom Italia), India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. Expect the phone later this year -- that's all we know for now. Score one (or ten?) for Voda.

So Vodafone's bringing the iPhone to India huh? first they should try to give us a better service. Especially the service in Kerala sucks! When the Hutch pug was around thing were way better..and I really loved that dog...:(
