S60v5: TouchCalc Lite

TouchCalc is developed specially for touchscreen devices. Large keys make
entering computations easy, and various input assistance features make
accessing the wide library of supported functions easier. Nokia N97/N97
mini users also can use a keyboard optimised view.

Formulas and terms can be entered into the program as they are written
in the real world – for TouchCalc, 5+5*5 is 30 and not 50.

Five memory banks allow you to store and retrieve results of
calculations with but two clicks. Of course, their values are persisted
even on power-off.

Finally, TouchCalc Lite contains a high-performance graphing engine
which can plot each and every function supported by TouchCalc in blazing
speed and amazing clarity. Ever wondered how a sine looks? TouchCalc
knows…

TouchCalc Lite can be purchased for 3 Euros via the Ovi Store
(http://store.ovi.com/content/23527); a version for Sony Ericsson‘s
phones will be made available in the near future.

Nokia n97s: thoughts on both of them

I've been using the n97 for the last couple of months. It's a great
phone if you're into social networking and surfin' the web. It's
durable, good build, and has good battery life.
It's external speakers are only good for voice output, use headphones
if you want to hear music - it's headphone output is real good. The
screen is virtually scratch proof, and the qwerty keyboard is good as
well.
Between this and the mini, the mini has subtle design differences like
no D pad, no camera lens cover, and only 8 gb of storage but since
it's expandable there's no problems. The mini feels better in your hand.

Nokia N97: Eye candy

For one, I'm impressed by how Nokia has managed to miss all the cool transition effects on this phone. For goodness sakes, they've even managed to get away without transitions on that "Swipe away the widgets" thing that they had been so laudable about. The swipe at best vanishes the widgets. They could have at least put in some of the transitions that came on the N78 with it's FP2 OS. The fact that they managed to add touch scrolling on the web browsers is an attempt. In my experience, it always ended up crashing my Opera Mini. GMail is another story.

Conclusion: The N97 video released by Nokia show
s their dream - reality is totally different. This phone has ZERO eye candy.

Indian n97 seems to be spiced up well, how thoughtfull of them !

It seems Nokia loves our desi developers so much that the Indian version of the Nokia N97 is slated to come packed with a whole lot of goodies - apps, games and other stuff which is completely desi ! This reminds me of the Made in India song again =)

The stuff that come bundled are freeware for the N97 users, but other s60 5th edition users might have to shell out some cash to get hold of these apps. They should be available at Nokia's Ovi store soon.

According to Vaibhav, these are the apps that he believes will how up:

APPLICATIONS - According to what I know, the following applications will come pre-loaded.

  • Wavesecure: To track, lock, backup and wipeout your device. You can even restore data via the internet. Quite similar to the new Apple offering.
  • Keypad Lock: This application will appear everytime the keypad is locked. To unlock the device you will be able to simply drag your finger across the screen. There will be four screens available - Leaf, Nature, Curtain and Snow.

    Keypad Lock

  • System Status: A task manager with the ability to show battery and signal strength, Memory & RAM availability and close/kill applications.
  • Other notable applications include Newshunt, a newspaper app with access to 15 Indian dailies in 9 Indian languages and Smart Guard, an application to protect/hide data such as contacts, messages and files/images.

GAMES - The will also come pre-loaded with the following games - The Sims™ 3, Guitar Rock Tour™, Brain Challenge and Marble Maze.

VIDEO - It will pack 6 thirty minute episodes of ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi‘.

WIDGETS - As far as Widgets go, there will be the usual Accuweather, Amazon, Facebook, Reuters, YouTube, Hi5 and Ovi. But when it comes to localised widgets, they are quite a number, you will have to see for yourself in the list below. The list is quite impressive with entries such as CNBC and Rediff Money for stock updates, Book My Show for movies, India Today and NDTV active for news, a Soccer widget and even a translator.

Nokia's N97 - what's it gonna be ?

The Nokia N97 is the next-in-line flagship device that Nokia's going to throw at Apple to fight it out with the iPhone though the Samsung Omnia is something to be reckoned with.

  • The N97s puny 434 Mhz processor, an ARM11, is seriously freaking fans out.
With such a weak processor God knows how they're gonna keep up with the transition effects shown in the promo videos. Not to mention the amount of software tweaking they'll have to do to get the mobile computing smoothened out, there will probably be a firmware update the first of every month - FWU Day, and everyone could flock to the closest NSUs ! But the 1500mAh battery tells us that that there will be good standby time - low consumption and all.
  • The slider mechanism is more complicated than usual.
Remember they couldn't even set the simple hinged slider on the n95 right ! In the end I had to stick it with scotch tape. Bad build for an X-flagship phone. For our beloved N97, we already know that the display ribbon shows up when the qwerty keyboard is unleashed - it's gonna get someone in trouble, fer sure !!
  • This phone is overweight ! Remember the heavy N81 phone ?
I will never understand this- why is the n81 so heavy? What weights 140 g inside that piece of glossy plastic? Only n93i is heavier than this. Surely that ain't good. What if I run and the n81 falls from a height? The mobile phone will break in pieces ( simple physics law- as heavier a thing is, the bigger damage happens if it fails). It's competitor, w910, is almost 60 g lighter than n81. Nokia could at least try to lose some weight before it was presented. Even Oprah did it !
Well the N81 was only 140gms, the N97 is 150gms ! The N95 is just 120!! That's a 25% increase in weight !!! These handsets are not only gonna look and feel like a computer, but weigh like one as well.. well then what's the point in buying these low power comps ?
  • Vaibhav from The Symbian Blog says that the N97 showed 52+MB of free RAM on booting. But if it'll allow us to multi-task remains to be seen with the underclocked processor.

  • The pre-order price for the N97 is 699$.
There is a PromoCode, CARTP409N which will get you a 10% discount (70$), but eliminate the coupled bluetooth headset. The market price of a BH-703 is just about the same so it's your personal choice. Judging by the size and weight of the mobile phone, Personally, I'd go for the headset - radiation and all. This is after Nokia corrected the error of selling it at 524$ with the coupon lowering this by another 50$ to 474$ - they must have realized the phones actual value..
  • When the N97 comes out on contract remains to be seen, perhaps with a good data plan (read unlimited) to make use of the great browser and mobile email features. I wonder if Opera is releasing any browser other than the generic version ?
All in all, it's a strange phone with a funny start.

Nokias N97 - qwerty, touch, what not ?

The Nokia N97 is the latest offering flagship model from the Finnish cell phone company, which might use this to get up after the setback which it got from the not so great N96. The N97 comes with a 3.5-inch 640×360 touchscreen display with tactile feedback, 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss glass lens, slide out QWERTY keypad, HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, 32GB internal memory and support for additional memory of 16GB via microSD. This marks the continuing evolution of Nokia’s touchscreen phones and the first time an Nseries mobile phone features a QWERTY keypad. While it does lack DVB-H technology that’s found in the N96, I’m sure most users wouldn’t mind that small sacrificial lamb for the N97’s existing feature set. Besides, i don't know if anyone even used it. This is also yet another tactic that Nokia uses to balance it's numerous phones.

Here’s a short promotional video for the N97 to get you even more excited for 2009.

It’s expected to begin shipping in the first half of 2009 with a €550 (roughlyP34,500) price tag attached to it excluding tax and subsidies. With its impressive line of features, I’m sure aspiring N96 and 5800 XpressMsuic phone owners will now think twice before making any hasty purchases from now until mid next year.

While there’s still no certainty if it will make it to the local market, I’m pretty optimistic that this one won’t suffer the same fate as the 6260 slide. Let’s just hope that when it does, its price won’t even come close to that of the XPERIA X1 so that more of us can get to enjoy this new beauty.
