Sync Contacts between Your iPhone and Your Computer

We had previously covered the basics of syncing, but this time we will dive into the intricate details of managing your contacts on your computer and then getting them onto your iPhone.

Setting Up Sync Options

Before you perform your first sync, you will have to set up when and how you’re going to do this on your iPhone and your computer.

Set Up Automatic/Manual Sync Options 

1. To make iTunes automatically sync your iPhone whenever it’s connected to your computer, connect your iPhone, open iTunes, and go to the Summary tab. 
2. Then check the option that says Automatically Sync When this iPhone is connected. 
3. To prevent iTunes from automatically syncing, make sure this option shown in Figure 3-2, is unchecked. 
4. If you want to ensure that no iphone are automatically synced to this computer, open up iTunes preferences and go to the iPhone tab. 
5. Then, check the option that says Disable Automatic Syncing for All iPhone. 
6. Since you need to now manually sync your iPhone, you will need to go to one of the tabs in iTunes that belongs to your iPhone (such as Summary, Info, Music, Photos, and so on) and click Sync when you want to sync.

Sync Contacts from Address Book on the Mac

For those of you not familiar with it, Address Book is the default contact management software for all Macs, and it comes pre-installed with every copy of OS X. If you want tight contact integration with other applications in OS X, this is the application you should use. Here’s an example of what we mean by tight integration. If you create a contact for your Mom and ad her picture to her contact picture section, whenever you receive an email from Mom, you’ll see the same picture of her in the top right corner of the message. Also, if you’re using iChat to talk to your mom, her icon will show up there as well. Naturally, your Mom’s picture will also appear on your iPhone whenever she calls you!

Create a New Contact 

Click File in the menu bar, and then click New Card. Or you can click the + button underneath the list of contacts. A new empty card will appear, as you see in Figure 3-3, and you can enter in details like their name, phone numbers, email address, postal address, job title, and the company they belong to. You can even customize the type of fields that show up in each contact card, so if you have no need to enter in information on people’s assistant’s names or the phonetic pronunciation of their names, you can remove those altogether. The good thing is that all the contact fields present in Address Book are supported in your iPhone. So everything you enter here will be visible in their contact entry on the iPhone as well. Once you’re finished entering in information, click the Edit button below your contact to finish editing. If you decide you want to add or change some details, click the Edit button again and resume editing.

Worlds of Mobile And Social Networking..

The worlds of mobile and social networking keep circling each other but (the hibernating Jaiku aside) never seem to really hit it off. Ewan Spence has been looking at Zyb, an online sync host and social network that launched recently. How integrated is Zyb and is it worth signing up for yet?

"So Zyb has many things going for it, but most of these things are only slightly above what you would expect. You have solid sync, but that option is available from many companies, e.g. Mobical or GooSync. You have a no-frills social network competing with similar networks with much greater complexity.

But, most importantly, you have a mobile focussed product with very little mobile component to it. I’d love to come back in six months, see what’s happening on the handset and recommend Zyb then, because right now I don’t think “that’s cute and looks nice” is enough to give it more than a qualified nod of the head.

Device Status of your phone

Nokia Device Status is a self-diagnosis tool that allows you to collect detailed system information both from your PC and your S60 device. Your current device configuration and phone settings are presented in a detailed summary, which you can use to determine the exact cause, if you run into problems.

With Nokia Device Status, you can save all the collected information to a file, and you can send the file to customer care services for closer inspection and analysis.

Collected data from your PC includes:

●Language of the operating system vs. that of Nokia PC Suite
●Version of Nokia PC Suite currently installed on your PC
●Drivers required to connect your phone to your PC
●Local time zone
●Log files created by Nokia PC Suite
●Regional and language settings

Collected data from your phone includes:

●Device model
●IMEI code of the phone
●Device memory and any available memory card
●Profiles and themes used on the phone
●Locations used to store data on the phone

After installation, you can access the application both from your phone and from your PC.

New Version of Nokia Maps - v1.2

A new version of Nokia Maps is now available for the N95, in addition to a new version of the Nokia Map Loader. Unfortunately the Map Loader's working also recquires the installation of the .NET framework 3.0 on a Windows XP computer, don't ask me why..

I recommend downloading both of them as having the latest version always has it's benefits.

THe new app is very different on my N95. Start-up splash screen shows Nokia Maps and there is the usual network question to click through (I have mine disabled).

The globe screen is also different, scrolling East/West and North/South now follows the long and lat axes and there is a three dot icon in the lower left that cycles red until a lock is achieved, when they all turn green. The cross-hair did NOT zoom in automatically to my GPS position either, so I had to do this manually with the * key and when I did this, none of my map data was available. SO i had to re-install all the maps... such a pain..

Which is when i found that there are new maps available for the new Nokia Maps..to download these this is what you've gotta do:

Method 1

1 - download and install Maps 1.2 to your phone BUT DON'T RUN IT YET.
2 - download and install Map Loader to your PC, connect your phone and run it.
3 - select the option to delete/remove the existing maps from your phone.
4 - Disconnect your phone and run the Maps program once allow it to get a fix and then exit Maps
5 - Reconnect your phone to Map Loader and download your maps, you should now get the latest maps.

Method 2

1 - download and install Maps 1.2 to your phone BUT DON'T RUN IT YET.
2 - download and install Map Loader to your PC, DON'T RUN IT
3 - connect your phone in mass storage mode and find the old maps folder, should be in E:/Private/20001f63 - Delete it
4 - Disconnect your phone and run the Maps program once allow it to get a fix and then exit Maps
5 - Reconnect your phone to Map Loader and download your maps, you should now get the latest maps.
In N95 the GPS receiver is located in the bottom of the device, below the numeric keyboard. When using the receiver, slide the numeric keypad open
and hold the device upright in your hand at an angle of about 45 degrees, with a clear view of the sky. Make sure, that your hand does not cover the GPS receiver.
Establishing a GPS connection may take from a couple of seconds to several minutes. Establishing a GPS connection in the car may take longer.

If your device cannot find the satellite signal, consider the following:
- If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a better signal.
- If the numeric keypad slide is closed, open it.
- If you are outdoors, move to a more open space.
- Check that your hand does not cover the GPS receiver of your device.
- If the weather conditions are bad, in such a case the signal strength may also be affected.
- Establishing a GPS connection may take from a couple of seconds to several minutes.
- Avoid to use screen saver when GPS connection is establishing.

N95 vs iPhone
Hey, what i think is both these phones are for different segments. I mean the n95 is usually bought for it's features by people who understand computers and modding. People who have n95's usually mod and customise them heavily and have(2have) an indepth idea of softwares and computers. Also the styling is way off when compared to the iphone.

The i-phone on the other hand is aimed at the cool dudes out there. These people don't need a 5mp camera( cuz they're not photographers?) nor the gps(not going trekking!) nor the dual slide...which is a waste of time and very clumsy too - being full of bugs. And besides.. who needs a double slide when you have a super cool touch screen that even lets you pinch it!


But in the end i bought myself a n95 :P..

Why i bought it??..

There are 4 problems for the average iphone user, and they are:
1. Virtual keyboard, how fast can you write on this ? Teens and a lot of adults today are SMS maniacs.
2. You can't use it with one hand.
3. No 3G. "What's the point of a multi-media device that can't deliver rich content!"
4. Low camera resolution.

100 iPhones in a stack would be: 1160 mm tall
100 N95s in a stack would be 2100 mm tall

Clearly the iPhone fails to stack up to the N95.. ;)

With chips as advanced as this already in the market, i think it will probably drive out PowerVR out of the mobile market just as it drove them out of the PC market. Probably within the next few years we may have ultra-portable gaming consoles. Come to think of it, the N95 is already a small gaming console by it-self!

I mean with the TV out cables and the advanced high-performance chip that drives it, the N95 did give pretty impressive results when i played System Rush on the TV. Try it out sometime - i'm sure you'll like it.
