The guys at Yeigo’s blog has rounded-up ten nice 'lil things that you didn’t know about Nokia (neither did i until i read this). The last one is sure to touch a chord for nature lovers..

1) The ringtone “Nokia tune” is actually based on a 19th century guitar work named “Gran Vals” by Spanish musician Francisco Tárrega. The Nokia Tune was originally named “Grande Valse” on Nokia phones but was changed to “Nokia Tune” around 1998 when it became so well known that people referred to it as the “Nokia Tune.”
2) The world’s first commercial GSM call was made in 1991 in Helsinki over a Nokia-supplied network, by Prime Minister of Finland Harri Holkeri, using a Nokia phone.
3) Nokia is currently the world’s largest digital camera manufacturer, as the sales of its camera-equipped mobile phones have exceeded those of any conventional camera manufacturer.
4) The “Special” tone available to users of Nokia phones when receiving SMS (text messages) is actually Morse code for “SMS”. Similarly, the “Ascending” SMS tone is Morse code for “Connecting People,” Nokia’s slogan. The “Standard” SMS tone is Morse code for “M” (Message).
5) The Nokia corporate font (typeface) is the AgfaMonotype Nokia Sans font, originally designed by Eric Spiekermann. Its mobile phone User’s Guides Nokia mostly used the Agfa Rotis Sans font.

8. Unlike other modern day handsets, Nokia phones do not automatically start the call timer when the call is connected, but start it when the call is initiated. (Except for Series 60 based handsets like the Nokia 6600)
9) Nokia is sometimes called aikon (Nokia backwards) by non-Nokia mobile phone users and by mobile software developers, because “aikon” is used in various SDK software packages, including Nokia’s own Symbian S60 SDK.
10) The name of the town of Nokia originated from the river which flowed through the town. The river itself, Nokianvirta, was named after the old Finnish word originally meaning sable, later pine marten. A species of this small, black-furred predatory animal was once found in the region, but it is now extinct.

You know what? When i read things like this about a company it makes me see the company in a more humane perspective. It changed my view of the company to something that we can all associate with.. well sort of...

N95 cum N90 cum N91 ??

N95 vs N95 8GB

I've just got my hands on a video that showcases the differences between the classic N95 and the newer meaner 8GB edition of the same. After watching this video you'll be able to say for sure whether you really need to go for the newer phone just now or whether to wait out for the next revouloutionary pone from Nokia..

N95 gets 6X LeNS !

Mobile phones with cameras are proving to be immensely useful for many purposes, mainly because they have the advantage of always being with you.

Sadly, the companies sell u phones with a 3.MPcam now and put-of the 7 MPfor next year, eventhough they could bring it out now if they wanted to. Accordingly, cameras with high quality optics are still rare and optical zoom lenses on cameras are even rarer.The N95 has a hi-res 5MP cam-but with no optical power while the n93i has the optical lens but powered by just a paltry 3.2MP sensor.

So if you’re one of those people who would like to have a 6X optical zoom on your mobile and would gladly pay big bucks for it, here’s one that will do the job for just US$19(excl. of shipping). It has a manual zoom and focus but as you can see from the images , it works very well, particularly at that price.

95 vs 93i - The NSeries ShowDown!

N93i is a N-Gage 2 enabled and is great for gaming because of it's ergonomics (I mean the button orientation and build). As it is we know that the N93i is capable to run the major games like "Creatures of the Deep" and especially "One Who's Next", but we also know that One Who's Next require to use the both hands and it runs in landscape mode. So the N93i is the great multimedia comp for the N-gage 2 platform.

But unlike the N95, the N93i doesn't have:

1) Built in GPS Navigator
2) HSDPA support
3) 5 Megapixel camera
4) 3,5 mm jack
5) and a load of small features that the N95 has, like the FP1 for instance.

On the other hand we have the N95 which is a great multimedia computer as well. In terms of technology the N95 is way better and much more functional and smarter that N93/N93i, but the major problem with this device is its ergonomics. I mean the button orientation which makes it's difficult to play on. But it does have GPS and HSDPA and lots of other things.Personally if I think for myself I would buy the N95 hoping it will support the N-Gage 2 experience in full, by that I mean if it will run the One Who's Next game and other great upcoming games for N-gage 2 service in the Landscape mode. But I can't yet imagine how to play this games on N95, no actually I can but it will be hard with the number pad closed when I activate the landscape mode. Maybe I'll have to use a keyboard to play these games after connecting the phone to the TV. Then it'll be like a gaming console..Cool!! And guess what guys, i just got a message from Mobility Intl. that they'll be sending in one of their iGo Blueooth StowAway Keyboards for a test drive!! YeaH!!!

and did i tell you that the N95 is based on the great OMAP 2420 chipset with PowerVR enavbled and it's capable to run 3D games just like that?? learn more about it here.
Right now I'm happy blending these two into my life using the best of both.. :D

And we have with us the arch rival of all da people who bought the n95 out there,, the N95 US Edition. Major Changes include US HSDPA, 128MB of total RAM and a 1300 mAh battery. With 80 MB of free RAM. Nice.

N93i - the rest of the story..

Problems

There are a lot of problems with the new N93i, mostly coming up due to the new design and form. For instance the mirror screen up front has been designed to facilitate using minor features of the phone without opening it and for seeing incoming call IDs. But when you stand outdoors the visibility of the screen reduces drastically - so much so that you'll have to bring it up to your eyes and twist and turn to get an angle that let's you see the screen. Problems with the form factor also arise such as a misalignment of the front face of the phone as well as some play..mostly towards the left. But on the looks front it really does looks good..!


Improvements

The new improvements include a joystick for side control when using the camera, buttons on the screen for added user friendliness, good Zeiss lens cover, stylish sim access and a battery similar to the n95 - but which lasts noticeably longer.


The Metal keyboard scores way high on looks and durability but is in the pits for usability..a real pain for my poor lil' fingers they've been. There isn't much of a divide between the buttons except a flimsy rubbery thing and the delete button is microscopic, you'll have lots of trouble with that little thing!!

Camera
Easy to use, with design elements of a handy cam, the N93i's Imaging Capabilities are similar to that of the the N93. Noise reduction is the same though the stereo effect has been found to be comparatively lower. Another bug that i found was that the brightness decreases upon zooming using the optical zoom. This is a real bad situation, because there isn't much use with a Optical Zoom camera if you can't get more detail into it!

Another thing i took note of was that the subject can see himself on the front screen and get an idea of what he looks like when the picture is taken. And girls could use it for putting on make-up and applying lipstick..creative of me isn't it?...

Speakers

The speakers are garbage compared to that of most other recent releases from Nokia.. it doesn't even come half way near to what the speakers of the Nokia 5700 can do! What good is a N-series multimedia phone if you can't even use it for hearing music?? Nokia seems to be losing it's touch here...

And so in the end the N93i is yet another expensive phone in the market today, and will be so until the next Nokia N-Series handset comes along.

Quickoffice Premier v4.5 (Upgrade) for S60 3rd

Our favorite Mini-Office suite is back again in a different avatar.. this time as the Premier version with a premier pricing - 50$(handango). Tagged as version 4.5.14.8, the upgrade weighs a full 2.4MB and recquires atleast 3MB free for smooth working.

One of the problems that the demo version had was that its a very non-functional demo... if you open an existing file I don't believe you can edit it at all. Its not a bad little editor, though, and it will open large Word and excel files without difficulties... my problem is that its SLOW.Guess I'll have to stick to my laptop for real writing....Unlike most other competing mobile office products, Quickoffice preserves documents during editing preventing document corruption and loss of formattingn and i believe that this little function has been made more perfect in the premier version.

1.Advanced spell check with free dictionaries available in multiple languages.

Behold the N93i!

Just like a cruiser bike the n93i comes thumping in, in a much more elegant way than the previous N93. Both are equally powerful handsets with minute differences here and there - especially in the looks and it's feel.

The handset was sent to me by WOM-World(thanks guys) and these are my..

First Impressions...

It comes with a large mirror backed screen featuring a smooth silver outline that reminds you of the much hyped Apple iPhone. Coming in a two-tone color design with a dominating Camera Housing it's definitely way up in my charts in looks. The Build Ergonomics are excellent and it definitely feels expensive(unlike the n95).

It comes featuring the new screen technology of OLED which is incorporated into it's mirror finish front, upping it's points in the style segment. The beautiful sculpting and styling makes it an elegant and durable phone - a first for nokia!

But ofcourse we all know that Nokia never creates a perfect phone for fear of affecting the sale of their other phones. And (probably)because of that the N93i too has it's share of complaints and bugs. More about them in the coming posts..

This and that - V12.0.013

These are certain things that i've started noticing after I installedu
the l8test N95 firmware.

1. The gallery button flashes on and of when the backlight goes of and
when the screen saver is activated. It looks real neat..reminds me of
the range indicator LED in the n73.

2. It fails to register about a quarter of my key strokes..and it
ain't a hardware problem!

3. Unlike popularly said the music player doesn't start with 2 strokes
of the multimedia menu - it is activated with a single long press of
the same key.

Those are all the differences noted till now..if you have any
suggestions feel free to comment.

Personalising the N95 - the Vaja way !!

Pamper your N95 with the new leather cases from Vaja. Known as the
"Ivolution Holster" these cases are way cool and are practically the next
best thing to naked ;)
They gaurantee to give you some really serious bragging rights(as if havin a
n95 wasn't enuf :D).

One of the other things that i found amusing is the fact that the
phone when equipped with the vaja case takes on the look of a US
Edition N95. And all these days i was sad thinking of how i'd show my
face in front of those with the US phone.

Another thing that I like most about all Vaja cases is how perfectly well
they are designed for their particular SmartPhone. Rather than a standard
"sleeve" design that would work with all the models, Vaja has taken a
different strategy - they create cases that are completely customized to the
device.

The Vaja case adds bulk to the N95, but because the leather is thin it
doesn't make any difference.

As usual the Vaja leather is superb. It's superbly soft with excellent
finishing, it lies perfectly taut on the phone, giving it a really
beautifull face-lift. After using the N95 for a few minutes with the
ivolution holster, the regular matt finish looks extremely boring.
Another feature that demands to be praised is that the standard
buttons are cloaked by a leather and fabric jacket that morphes the
buttons to a way cooler design. I loved the way how the leather bends
and weaves around the phone in a smooth curvy kind of way.

Chek 'em out guys and you'l know why I'm so happy, I always liked my phones
to be as close to the real thing as possible and not like people in jackets
looking like Eskimos with all that thick covering. If you don't get what i
mean you could go here. Check out the post, especially the 1st pic shown there - it looks like a burger with a n95 fillet!

Well, fear no more with these chic casings from Vaja. They'l protect your
phone and look good doing it!

Pros: Looks Good, Feels Good, Beautifull Leather, superb fit, gives it the look of a US edition n95 or even the 8GB if you try.

Cons: Tad too expensive - but the value ain't bad, there are some creaks initially - but they soften up with use.

Verdict: Go For It!

Personalising the N95 - the Brando way!!

It's always great to own a N95, more so when it's different from the one that everyone else owns. The standard N95 that comes with the silver face is nice but how would you rank one that comes with a black MusicEdition style face? or a pink one for gifting your girl? or how 'bout a blue one that looks super cool?! Wouldn't it be great?? Ofcourse it will - and that's why I decided to review some cases from Brando.

The cases i received are from Brando - and I must say that I really
liked their cases. The case package includes a front plate, and a
battery cover for added customisation(you could perhaps put your own
graphic or text on it if you have the time and creativity to do it),
but I don't use the battery cover..I'm happy with the face housing
alone.

The silver housing is sort of like a ditto of the Original Nokia
Product and is an excellent cheap replacement part which will save you
the trouble of dealing with the Nokia Care Center which I absolutely
detest(of all the cases that i have had with the NSC only a rare few have
been positive). And i must say that with the complete silver suiting on the n95 it does look kinda sporty !!

Then comes the Black Housing. Put it on and you have a phone that
could easily be mistaken for the much hyped Music Edition itself! The
finish is excellent with a slightly glossy effect similar to that of
the actual Music Edition about to be released.

Gifting your girl friend a N95 would be the best gift ever. But what
if you have it with a cute lil' pink housing that comes with a soft
smooth finish? Now that would be really something 'cuz she'd know that
you really put your mind into giving her something nice, rather than
just spending money on the best in the market. And when her friends
see the pink N95 they're bound to ask about it. nice eh? ;) Did you know that Darla Mack also has a pink one!!

Finally comes my favourite - the Mystic Blue colour gives the N95 just
the effect that it needs! Coming in a matt finish this is the ultimate
touch that you can give your beloved phone. LUV IT!!

So what are you waitin' for?? Go get yourself one of these chic
housings and get all the bragging rights that you deserve. Even the other N95 users will be there looking in awe at your handset :D
Bathe yourself in the glory of your creation!!

Nokia N95 8 GB ?

Is it really the Nokia N95 8GB or just a color change on the N95 3G US Edition?? An N95 music edition is seriously going to blow away the happiness of a lot of N95 users - were fed up wih the US edition of the N95 being launched with the same name as it is.

I did expect something like this to happen when they launched the N95 with users manual stating that the technically the N95 would be known as the N95-1. But i didn't expect anything of this magnitude !!

The FCC website (US regulator) currently has some information about the Nokia N95 8GB on its website. Hardware changes include a reworked back section with the removal of the camera lens cover to allow for a bigger battery. The top slide media keys are now slightly raised and the phone itself is black. There are also some interesting hints about the software in the manual with references to N-Gage gaming and the Nokia Music store.

The soft keys have become smaller - god knows why they did that, making keys smaller just increases the difficulty in using the already awkard design of the keys. When i say awkard i don't mean they're awkard to look at but awkard to use. Another thing is that this wasn't done to increase the screen size - it was merely done to include the NOKIA tag beneath the screen.

The black color also looks tacky and cheap. It just doesn't match the phone, and doesn't reach anywhere near the grandeur of the dual tone colors of the Classic N95.

On the software part there seems to be new additons to the phone like the inclusin of the N-Gage Application with which you can test drive N-Gage applications as well as play some of the games when they get released. I'm talking about the new N-gage here!.

There also may not be any MicroSD support fot the phone as it includes Mass Memory support.

The phone is said to be due for release by the 29th of August, so if any plans to buy it please let me know.

N95 - Customise the Look

When I tried to take apart my N95 the other day, I found that the (back) cover can be easily popped out. This makes it easy to customize and change covers... I don't think the other N-Series phones have this cool feature..

I'l be putting up a few reveiwed panels within a few days. Damn, it'll be cool to have a N95 that looks different than the rest. With a few lil' tweaks we could even morph it to look like a Music Edition !

Nokia 5700 - The good, the bad & the ugly..

A few days ago, I had the chance to use the Nokia 5700 ExpressMusic courtesy my friend BinuRaj. This one was black in colour and had a 1GB microSD - filled to the brim wih music(obviously). The 5700 is kind of like the update to the Nokia 5300..but sometimes i wonder whether it really is good enough to be considered as a successor.

Most music fans usually crave for a simplistic music device that can play great music as well as provide sufficient bragging rights - which is why the iPod is such a hit.

The 5700 doesn't seem to work that way..it's music output through the ear phones is excellent, more so if you use your favorite headset but it's loudspeaker's performance is..uhm..minimal. The volume is low ant the sound hazy. I considered them as a bad omen for the things to come.

The menu & delete buttons were'nt friendly at all - you had to practically aim first before hitting the key(i really felt like hitting it!). And it's revolving bottom is about sa reliable as the N95's dual slider. Both are unique - not only in their features but also in their complaints...

On the other hand the body materials are really good, i particularly liked the matt finish in the middle. The phone's processor is above 350mhz which makes for a real smooth OS - the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1; which is one of the reason why i got interested in this particular smartphone.

The screen is crisp and brings out the colours vibrantly. Movie playback was also good - excelt the sound when you put it in speaker mode. The 3.5mm jack lets you plug in your favourite headset easily - you are not restricted tot he Nokia headsets alone, which i must say is a very good move.The 2MP camera also does a good job in aking those precious moments with panache, the flash kicking in whenever you need it the most. Moreover the battery compartment is placed neatly and holds the BP-5M battery snug and cosy. Mind you - it ain't easily removable! And the battery life is pretty good too..especially compared with that of the N95 Euro Edition. The USA Edition is ofcourse a different story...

Overall the 5700 is a nice phone, but it ain't gonna woo anyone away from an iPod.and be carefull when you twist it !!
