Mapsters Game Offers Free 6210 Navigator

The Mapsters is one of Nokia’s various marketing creations, designed to be appealing and offer an interesting way to learn about a specific product, in this case, Nokia Maps. They’re a dinosaur, a monster, and a robot that show you around Nokia Maps. Aside from the exploration aspect, they’ve also got a competition up and running over at the Mapster’s site, with the grand prize being a free Nokia 6210 Navigator.
The game is rather simple - you’ve got a simple map of the world, and a city will pop up along the bottom of the game area. Your goal is to click on the map as quick as possible, as close to where that city is actually located. Don’t be fooled, it sounds rather simple, but it’s alot harder than you’d think. You get points based on how quickly you click, as well as how close to the correct position you are.

My record is 135k, though that’s nowhere near the 268k that others have posted, so you’ll have to be pretty nimble to have a standing in this little competition. You can play here, just click on ‘Competition’ at the top of the site.

Space Impact : Kappa Base

Remember the old black and white space impact that we had on the 3310? Just had a few hundred pixels and it still was a great game to play. Well, now it seems NGage wants to resurrect it and thy have included it in the upcoming slew of games intended for the new generation NGage Gaming Devices as a commercial game.(means u'll have to pay to receive).
Space impact Kappa base is the sequel to the previous space impact series. But unlike the previous one's this one has an great story line and stunning graphics - characteristic of all NGage games. The music is neat as well and the sound track is similar to other scrolling fighter games, trance I think. There are 4 main characters in the game, each part of the elite fighters of the Human race. Each of these characters have their very own custom Sky Blades desighned with the characters of their pilots in mind. The basic story line is the same, but modified a bit according to the character you play. The modifications come out in the form that each player has his/her own reason to win the battle and hence the war. It's only their ideals and way of thinking that is different, a fact which is shown throughout the game. Each level in the game is of the same format as the previous space impact versions with the big bad guy coming in at the end. The weapons are fully customisable, though you have to buy them with the credits you earn from each battle. Buy new weapons. And then new skyblades - there are some heavily customised versions that each have a major plus point and a weakness as well. Unlike in the older versions the special weapon is not activated by getting power ups, instead you have to increase your kinetic energy to get enough power to use them. Kinetic energy is accumulated by grazing past incoming bullets and enemy fire - but don't get too close or you'll be blasted to smithereens!

NFS : Pro Street on ur N95

Need for Speed: ProStreet will take the Need for Speed series in a new direction of gameplay. Instead of an arcade style of gameplay which has dominated the series, ProStreet will focus much more on realism and move closer to, but not into, racing simulation, and still with options to use driving assistants to make driving easier and more arcade-like. Unlike its predecessors, all racing in ProStreet will take place on closed tracks, thus making it the first game in the series not animating illegal racing behaviour since Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed, hence there will not be any police in the game. Performance tuning will take up a large part of gameplay in a way that even a small adjustment of the shape of a car's body will impact its performance.
That was what wikipedia had to say about the NFS : Pro Street on your PC. The mobile version on the other hand has great graphics for a phone game and includes performance tuning too but to a limited extent. But all in all it's a great game to kill time on your morning commute or while on the subway.. just make sure you show-up for whatever you were travelling for instead staying hooked up onto the phone ;) The game features both a Quick race for gettin' the feel and a full-fledged Career mode in which you start with an old fashioned Toyota Corolla(1987 model i 'zink) and then you can earn money and upgrade to even a Nissan CT-R Prototype car or the good lookin' BMW M3 E92!!

Earn money either by winning race purses or by awesome drifting - which is easy provided u get the drift (pun intended ;) )

The tracks in the game are aplenty, and with all the Slipstreaming, "good lane" and drifting techniques to be learnt it'll keep you busy for a long time..just keep to the center of the drift bar or you could end up as road kill !

One of the good things i noted about the game is that unlike it's PC version the mobile version doesn't hog the system resources of the phone, a boon for N95 users. In fact it only takes about 7MB of RAM !

Here are some pics of the game:
The car..
The race..
The drift..

Whoops!
damn...

Quaking on an s60 v3

Quake II for symbian s60v3 is now available online, both software and hardware renderers in the same package. Also N95-1 users can only use the software renderer as the OpenGL renderer will need more memory than it has. N95-2/3/4 users are able to run it in hardware render. Needles to say, that you still need to update to firmware v20 in order to play even with the software renderer as v20 has much better free RAM at any given time.

Currently the keys are mapped as follows when ingame, in console you should be able to type by multitapping:
LSK = return / jump
RSK = esc
Joystick = forward, back, left, right, fire
* = look around (with joystick)
# = sidestep
c = change weapon
green answer key = center view
volume up/down = look around/sidestep

Everything is a hot key to shoot! Or you could just use a
bluetooth keyboard..

Downloads:

quake2_v100_armv6_fpu.sisx - Quake2 engine (requires floating point unit and ~25-30 megabytes of free RAM, includes builtin support for following mods: ctf, xatrix and rogue)
quake2_v100_src.7z - Source code for Quake II
q2_changelog.txt - Changes since previous versions

Why NokMote is bigger than we think!

A few days ago I'd posted here about Samir's latest 3D Accelerator based app, the NokMote. But unlike previously shown where it was basically touted to be just a menu controller, Waynder from Symbian-Freak has shown that it does a much better job in turning the phone into a game controler - similar to the Nintedo Wii.

The moment the NGage app gets released, the Mobile Gaming World is going to undergo a reveloution, with possible side-shocks hitting the likes of the Sony PSP,Nintendo GBA, and maybe even the PS3&XBoX! After all using the N95 all Ngage games are playable on TV . We are on the verge of a new era in Gaming, that's for sure!

Symbian Review

Every Symbian developer knows that the most of mobile applications for new Symbian devices have to go through the special certification, a Symbian Signing. For many small development companies this new initiative of Symbian has turned to a plaque and made the development of Symbian applications not interesting financially. Symbian market becomes to be dominated by companies, not single developers.

In this article we want to give some tips for Symbian application developers.

What does the Symbian Signing bring?

There are some benefits and some drawbacks as always.

Beneficial is this mobile software certification system first of all for the consumer. Buying the certified applications the consumer can be sure that there is a certification authority that has tested the application, so it can not crash the system or include viruses.
The main drawback is felt by the developers. They have pay more, wait unpredicted time for the certification and have to fill out many papers to pass the Symbian Signing.

Nokia Mobile Gaming - Master Plan?

Nokia is to relaunch is N-Gage gaming service in November, with an added feature that it will be compatible with all N-Series devices. With 40 million N-Series units already sold, the new service Nokia is offering represents an attractive prospect to users of Ngage and the N-Series. Devices compatible with the service will include: Nokia N73, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8GB, Nokia N93, Nokia N93i, Nokia N95 and Nokia N95 8GB.

To gain customer interest, Nokia is offering free trials of all well-known games including FIFA 08 and gamers can then chose to buy the complete title at a later date. Capcom, I-Play and EA are amongst the firms developing games for the service, with EA preparing FIFA 08, The Sims 2: Pets, Tetris and Tiger Woods PGA Tour for the format.

“With the new N-Gage experience, fans of some of our most popular franchises like FIFA or The Sims can play and stay connected with other fans. With millions of compatible Nokia devices already in the marketplace, we’re very excited to help bring quality mobile gaming expriences to the fingertips of a global audience,” said Barry Cottle, senior vice president and general manager at EA Mobile.

Nokia plans to offer games at an ultra low price of €10 (£6.78) and daily and monthly rental options will also be available - thus making it an affordable option for all gamers on the move.

If things continue like this, I predict a War to be started in the Mobile Arena. Something similar to the those being fought in the PC Gaming Market. And the first strike will probably be by NVidia onto PowerVR.
