Zagg InvisibleShield Follow up post

It's been a few weeks since I'd installed my Zagg InvisibleShield and the device has already been through it's usual quota of free-falls and scraping. Interestingly, the Invisibleshield has performed pretty well. The screen is still scratch free and the little stickers at the sides have yet to fall of. Of the few drops that were on the heart-stopping side one was particularly wrenching.

The fall was from a pile of books on my table top. When I'd pulled a booklet from under them the whole thing toppled with the n900 leading the way. This was followed by a direct hit on a metal dumbbell. Seemingly the Zagg InvisibleShield took the brunt of the hit. Check out the pics below.

So much for being invisible and Invincible. Now let's see if it lives up to Zaggs self-healing hype.

Nokia Windows Phone 7 Device undergoing development

Nokia R&D is moving onto the final stages in the development of their Windows 7 device and Nokia has planned to launch its first smartphone using Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 at the end of the year, according to Taiwan's Commercial Times.

Two models of Window phones were on Nokia's agenda - a full touchscreen device and a sleeker design with a numpad.

The ailing company announced in February it would use Microsoft's Windows phone software most of its smartphones, and said it would start volume shipments of these smartphones in 2012.

Android on Nokia Phone

Ok, so that was unexpected. Never imagined Nokia to be able to run an Android OS however old it might be. Must've undergone some serious porting.

Update:
It's just a UI skin that feels like Android and not an actual port of Android. Thanks Anon.

Free Watch: Angry Birds Cinema

This movie is just as fun as watching the original LooneyToons series - I really think they should start a cartoon series.

Why Nokia might not scrap Symbian after all

Symbian is both a pioneer among the smartphone operating systems and a product without a clear future. Nokia is still hoping to sell more than 150 million Symbian smartphones.

The current range of models reflects Nokia's desire to appeal to a range of target audiences. The N8 is the company's multimedia flagship, with a 12 megapixel camera and HDMI output for direct connection to an HDTV.

The C7 is the convenient do-it-all device, with a touchscreen and few physical buttons. Then there are two models aimed at business customers: the E7 with its slide-out QWERTY keyboard and the E6 with a keyboard directly under the monitor. The X7 is aimed at a younger audience, with better game playing on the larger screen and quick access to the online network.

Nokia is also betting on its free navigation software as a powerful draw. The company's devices come preloaded with maps for up to 200 countries, showing routes for drivers and pedestrians. Nokia also recently added in 3D views as well. The acquisition of mapmaking specialists Navteq, a transaction costing millions, ensured that the Finns have all the components for navigation in-house. All these are only available on it's Symbian Platform.

Symbian mobiles are also designed to allow users to compose their own start page, with widgets displaying new email messages and social media posts. Unlike competitor Apple, Nokia promises compatibility with Flash videos as well. The devices come in a solid metal housing that sits well in the hand.

But one question remains: Why have Nokia's Symbian telephones sold so poorly in recent years? After all, new company CEO Stephen Elop felt it necessary to change horses midstream and switch to the Microsoft software. Read more about the NokiaSoft controversy here.

Industry experts have repeatedly distilled the problem down to a simple formula: Nokia has solidly built devices -- and software that can't keep up with competitors like Apple's iOS software for the iPhone and iPad or Google's Android operating system. The rise of Android phones was the straw that broke the camel's back for Nokia's smartphone strategy. Maemo and MeeGo were left on the sidelines.

The weaknesses of Symbian become clear to customers when they try to type in a Google search or WLAN access codes on the virtual phone keyboard, or when they try to search through menus that sometimes seem to have no rhyme or reason. "There are too many settings in too many different places," says industry watcher Michael Gartenberg.

The decision to move to Windows Phone doesn't mean a sudden death for Symbian though. Nokia has in fact pledged to continue developing it. The current Symbian update includes better controls for the touchscreen and the ability to run multiple apps at once. In total some 250 new functions are included.

Users can acquire apps from Nokia's proprietary Ovi platform, which sees more than five million downloads each day, the company reports. That said, it has significantly fewer programs available than Apple's App Store or the Android market. That is considered a central competitive disadvantage for the Symbian platform. Nokia has since decided to scrap the Ovi brand.

Problem: DND service and Emergency messages

Those of you who have been fed up with those irritating calls from telemarketers must surely have activated DND service by now. I did too. In India, you can activate DND by sending the SMS "START DND" to 1909.

Vodafone customers also have a feature by which you can send an emergency message. You're supposed to use it when you have Zero balance. Using this feature you can send Vodafone a message and vodafone forwards that message to your friend as a request to contact you asap.

Now the problem is that if you have DND activated on your mobile you will be prevented from recieving these emergency messages. By some fluke of law, the emergency message is regarded as a tele-marketing message and thus blocked.

So if you've got DND activated, be aware that it'll also prevent emergency messages from reaching you.

What do you hate in a Touch Screen Device

I've owned a lot of touch devices from the Nokia 7710, the Nokia n97, the N8 and the Nokia N900. And do you know what they have all in common other than the Nokia badge? It's scratches. After a couple of months of use the screen is a haze of minor scratches and lines.

In the beginning a few scratches here and there are not such a big deal. But with use they add up and pretty soon you end up with a really dirty screen. I've tried a good share of screen guards and while they promise to be scratch proof they have yet to stand by it.

The other day while I was browser shopping at MobileFun, I came across the Zagg InvisibleShield for my Nokia n900. With my experience I decided at once that I won't waste more of my monies on that accessory. And I continued searching for any new cool gadgets they might have (check out AngryBird cases and the kindle page).

That's when I got a courier from MobileFun that had been due a month ago. And guess what it had - an InvisibleShield for the Nokia N900!

Nokia N8: Anna and Magenta

Nokia has released a N8 in what seems to be a hot pink or magenta color. That handset already has most of the VIBGYOR in it's line, and will soon be adding a shade of light red to its anodized aluminum case. Observing the image above, the pink N8 will also feature the updated Symbian Anna, though Nokia unfortunately fails to tell us when we may expect this hopefully refreshed OS to arrive. The color looks overrated to me.

7 Nokia cellphones that revoloutionised the world - i think

The good folks at Nokia Blogs have complied a list of Nokia devices that they believe to have changed the world. Though i Do have a correction with their last device all in all the list brings back memories.

Nokia Cityman - I agree
Nokia 8210       - I agree
Nokia 6110       - Nokia 3330 had a far greater market share and thus effectively it was far better at changing the world
Nokia 1100       - I agree, this was one rugged phone
Nokia 7710       - I think the Nokia 7610 was far better selling
Nokia N95        - I totally agree!
Nokia N8          - Full of Crap! The nokia n900 was and Is revolutionary especially with it's community support from the great TMO.

Symbian Anna

Symbian Anna seems to be steadily making it's way across most of Nokias premium handsets and mobile computers. Though it's still the flawed SYmbian at it's core, Symbian Anna prmises to freshen up with a new array of iconsets and transitions. The N8, E7, C7 and C6-01, the phones that ran what was formerly known as Symbian^3, will all be getting it "over the coming months," while the newly announced X7 and E6 devices are shipping with it preloaded. The change list includes real homescreen scrolling, an overhauled browser, and yes, even a QWERTY onscreen keyboard in portrait orientation - we n900 users have been waiting for it for ages! There's also new iconography and heavily refreshed Ovi Maps, which now include predictive search.
