What is stephen elop doing?

Stephen Elop, Nokia's new CEO, is struggling with competition from Apple Inc, maker of the iPhone, and Google Inc, whose Android software is used in smartphones made by Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc and Samsung Electronics Co. Elop, the first non-Finn to run the company, has yet to present his long-term plans for Nokia after almost four months on the job.

What is he waiting for? Is nokia going to end it's production lines and move on to telephony service solutions. Or will it just take another turn and move onto a new industry like it did a few times before it beame a communications company.. they used to make rubber boots at very cheap rates you know.

Nokia X7 - is symbian the problem

Nokia X7
Nokia has cancelled it's planned release of the Nokia X7 multimedia phone along with AT&T.

Nokia had planned to offer the touch phone this year exclusively on AT&T's US network.

Last year, Nokia delayed its N8 smartphone by at least three months due to production delays. It remains to be seen whether this is the reason for this years delays as well. Laurie Armstrong, a spokeswoman for Nokia, said the company doesn't comment on plans with wireless carriers.

The Nokia X7 also runs the symbian 3rd iteration operating system which is a very unappealing operating software. The delay could also be due to the OS having problem which is a very probable cause. The symbian website was taken down last year. It's last theme was a cartoony design which was a last ditch effort by thr Symbian foundation to revamp their pblic face.

Another blow for landphones

When cell phone sales soared everyone knew landphones were about to become history. But still it held on with all it's strength from becoming another item in history books and museums.

Now, headsets could make many office landline phones unnecessary, as businesses decide to route calls through their office computers. Companies can save money by simply buying employees headsets instead of desktop phones, said Tavis McCourt, a managing director and analyst at Morgan Keegan, who follows the internet telephony market. Software like Lync from Microsoft makes it possible to use the internet and your computer to make calls.

Nokia (no longer) comes with music

The world's top cellphone maker, Nokia, is ending its bundling of free music downloads with cellphones in 27 countries.

Nokia will continue to sell phones with 12-month subscription to free music downloads in China, India and Indonesia and with 6-month subscriptions in Brazil, Turkey and South Africa.

Nokia unveiled the service in late 2008 in Britain -- seen as a test market for new mobile services in Europe -- but has lacked operator support and failed to attract many customers.

Reasons behind the lacklustre performance include use of older supporting handsets for the product at its launch, digital rights management (DRM) software that tied downloaded music to the device and a difficult to understand product offering.

Besides, no one wants to buy music these since it's available for free online although it's illegal.

DRM software limits sharing of songs between different devices. Consumers with the free music bundle in the 27 countries where the sale of the service have stopped will continue to have access until their subscriptions run out.
