N95 - Camera point

Did you know that you can take quick photos with your n95 without
waiting for Carl-Zeiss to finish his autofocussing ?

There are 3 ways to take a picture:

¤Slightly press the shutter button until the autofocussing box turns
green and then fully press the button.
¤Do the same in a single flow and the camera will automatically wait
for the autofocussing to complete and take the picture unless the
autofocus box turns red.
¤Press the button hard and the camera will take a quick picture
irrespective of the status of focus.

Try it out on your phone !

The Curious Case of Nokia Care

In some places Nokia users are all praise for Nokia's customer case
service - in fact the way they do it makes me question the
authenticity of my "friendly" neighbourhood care center. I've already
posted about my last encounter with them before.

This time around I decided to pay them a visit because i was concerned
about my N95. The OEM panel was virtually shredded, and the keypads
had light leaking all around the keys. I'd bought a replacement panel
kit and just wanted them to fix it onto my phone. They agreed to do
it. For 40$. And that doesn't include the top/bottom covers or the
slider. A service charge of 50$ to remove a coupla screws ? They gotta
be kidding me ! But "no" they say, infact they justified their price
saying that it was a risky procedure that involved a "lot of screws"
and components.
So i walked out , and came back home. Then i took hold of a pair of
Torx screwdrivers and got to work.

Half an hour later - I carefully put it all back together and switched
on the phone. Voila ! It was alive and running !!
I even firmed up the slider with some Scotch tape. It looked and felt
as good as new !! Happy me .. I must have saved around 60 bucks for
the job. Now I'll go spend it on another NGage game =)

Reduce your weight the Nokian way

Everyone wants to reduce their weight and look slim and stunning - except those who take obesity as a lifestyle option. There are lots of methods to reduce weight and I have listed some of the Nokian ways below. And of course those of you who still need the usual methods can use the options given below them.

The Nokia Activity Monitor is great. It displays charts and statistics, in real-time, about your movements while walking or running. It counts the number of steps, and determines the distance covered and the energy expenditure. Summaries are stored in a diary so that you can compare your activity level over longer periods of time. It is most accurate when you attach the phone to your belt, or upper arm, and it also works well if carry your phone in a pocket of your clothing. It might underestimate the number of steps if you keep the phone in a bag that you hold in your hand (as opposed to over your shoulder), and the most difficult case is when you hold the phone in your hand. Inevitably, false steps are detected sometimes, for example when you are cycling or driving.

The Activity Monitor currently runs on the Nokia Nseries phones like N95, N95 8GB, and N82. You must have a memory card in your phone for the application to work. Be aware that the Activity Monitor's use of the accelerometer requires a fair amount of battery power. It does not shut down gracefully when the voltage drops, so keep an eye on the battery indicator during the day, and don't forget to stop the Activity Monitor before you go to bed !

Cheers!!!!

The Folder.exe virus - only known attacker on the s60 v3

This is a question put forward at one of the Orkut Communities regarding the folder.exe virus:
Heard that there is none of the virus affect still in N95.

But I think my N95 is infected by the Virus.

I had File Explorer installed in my cell. I had checked that all my folders attributes in the E: turned to Read, Hidden & system and also .exe file at each place were created, same as the folder name.

This happened after I connected my cell though a Virus infected system and transferred some data.

Should I install an antivirus or format my cell?

Actually, the name "new folder.exe" is not the real name of the virus - it's a Brontok virus.
And it doesn't really affect the Symbian S60 v3 operating system, it only affects windoes systems. So the effect of the virus is most probably done while you were browsing the contents of your phone through your PC. This is my assumption ofcourse!

The Brontok worm is a computer worm that affects computers running Microsoft Windows. It spreads by sending itself to email addresses harvested from the affected computer. Variants of the Brontok worm include:
Brontok.A
Brontok.B
Brontok.C
Brontok.D
Brontok.F
Brontok.G
Brontok.H
Brontok.I
Brontok.K
Brontok.Q

In order to remove this virus you will have to format your phone memory, but there is still a chance of saving your microSD. But if you had inserted the microSD into your computer's card reader then it might have been affected as well! In that case follow these steps:

  1. Boot my computer with the XP LifeCD (I use XP - OS). The XP LifeCD made by Bart PEBuilder (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder). or can use Knoppix LifeCD.
  2. With the LifeCD, all of the hidden files can be shown. So I can rename the MSVBVM60.dll (it's a hidden file) with the new one name (example : MSVBVM60-old.dll). If this file missing/ unavailabled, the virus can't active.
  3. Boot the computer by the HDD and turned off the System Restore.
  4. Delete all the task in Schedule Task.
  5. Remove all the entries in the Registry. (to unlock the registry, install the UnHookExec (right click this file and choose install), it can be downloaded in www.symantec.com
  6. This virus entries names like : "kesenjangansosial","rakyatkelaparan","b..." just find these items in the registry. Examples : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wi... HKEY_USERS\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\...
  7. Install the Antivirus with the newest Definition Files.
  8. Scan it.
  9. Done.

Or you could try this, it's known to work:
Download here: http://technize.com/2008/01/22/smart-anti-virus/

a neat 'lil joke

Once upon a time the government with Ruling Party XYZ.. had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert. Ruling Party XYZ Said.. - "Someone may steal from it at night." So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job. Then Ruling Party XYZ Said.. - "How does the watchman do his job without instruction?" So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies. Then Ruling Party XYZ Said.., - "How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?" So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people. One to do the studies and one to write the reports. Then Ruling Party XYZ Said.. , - "How are these people going to get paid?" So they created the following positions, a time keeper, and a payroll officer, then hired two people. Then Ruling Party XYZ Said.., - "Who will be accountable for all of these people?" So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal Secretary. Then Ruling Party XYZ Said.., - "We have had this command in operation for one year and we are $18,000 over budget, we must cutback overall cost." So they lay off the night watchman.

Nokia 5800 gets the EDIT key

One of the biggest shortcomings of the Nokia 5800 is that it doesn’t have the “Pencil Key” (edit) anymore - the key that allows you to do multiple selection. But it ain't a trouble anymore with this cute workaround :

1) Download the The Pencil application here

2) Click English on the left side if you dont understand Russian, I am sure many of you don’t and it is better than babel fish

3) Get it Symbian Signed here.

4) Install it and Run it, you will see just a RED screen, click on the button which you want as your default pencil key , then click save and press back.

5) Now if I press green key and i scroll and i can now do multiple selection.
