Vodafone does public service

This is the first of it's kind in thrissur. Usually all India telecom providers are misers partly due to their very low tariffs forced by TRAI (telecom regulatory authority of india). But Vodafone it seems has taken the first step in providing convenience to the public. This charging dock has been spotted at Kalyan Apparels, Thrissur.

Speculation: Nokia and it's N9

That's a same page who have example leaked C7, plus that's the same device we saw 3 months ago in that "advert".

Keyboard looks hot. It's ALL metal so that's sweet too. Now i just need the full specs and see meeGo-Harmattan running on it and i will be getting this next to my Galaxy S for sure.

Looks legitimate - on engadget now.

Best I found was the Galaxy S w/ 512mb RAM and 2gb ROM.
Xperia X10 has 384mb RAM maybe N9 could shoot for 768mb?

Though not as much as they used to, the Yen symbol hasn't been seen since the N810 ;)

Read thoughts about this Nokia N9 faucet leak here.

Nokia N9: another nokia leak

With the frequent leaks coming from the Nokia Corp. faucet, one thinks whether it ain't high time for them to get a plumber to fix things up. We had the premature firmware release for the n900, then there was the nokia n8 leak and now this. It's starting to become so regular that perhaps Nokia has decided to make it a regular PR event.

The N9, Nokia’s new Flagship device is believed to run the brand spankin’ new MeeGo OS. It looks kind of quirky to me - like those digital diaries that were all the rage 10 years ago..
As you can see, the N9 improves on the Tilt-Slideout keyboard design of the N97 variants, and has a N8-ish metallic design to it, with pretty well spaced out chicklet keys.
The last pic made me decide that this device is too shabby. The N9 is written on a bit of plastic lodged into the keyboard bezel, and the pin connected to the side of the device looks to be a chinese after market make.

The Nokia N9 had been leaked to the WWW by Baidu and I got it from ZomgItsCJ

Nokia n8: a review came in

A review came in today of an experience with the nokia n8.. sadly no pics though. So I've attached a generic pic from Nokia so that you can fill your eyes with it as your dream about this little monster,,

Scale:
1-Trash it, 2-Only if no alternates, 3-Average, 4-Good, 5-Outstanding

Features (5/5)
The Nokia N8 is nothing less than a computer. 12MP camera with Xenon flash, 3.5 inch AMOLED display, Aluminium body, HDMI output, 3D Graphics Accelerator. Also included Quad band GSM and 5 band-yes thats right!!, a 5band support for UMTS / HSDPA... Phew!!
I think Nokia has done a terrific job of fitting all these in a small package. 5/5 for features.

Navigation(5/5)
Have to give a 5, though Nokia (Ovi) maps are not the best, but get the work done well, and its free..!! Satellite lock from cold start was pretty fast, and navigation was effortless.

Ergonomics (2/5) and Build Quality (3/5)
Encased by a aluminuim body (feels metal) which can withstand a ding or two without issues. Problem areas are the top and bottom covers which are flimsy, and are plastic.
The screen is capacitive, and touch response is good, better than other Nokia touchscreens. Home, Call connect and end keys-(3 physical keys), these are a nightmare, and are not tactile. The call connect and end buttons are the smallest that i have seen in any phone.
Otherwise, its a pleasure to hold the wide, and handy Nokia N8. The screen picks up fingerprint.
The SIM slot and microSD card slot, both are on the left side, and the cover had an annoying tendency to fall off.

Battery Life (3/5)- Initial results.
Ran the N8 with all connectivity options enabled, and it did manage to survive more than a day.

Camera (5/5)-Initial results.
Just one word-Amazing. Really good to see a Nokia produce images that can compete with any of the other 12MP smartphones. Colors look natural, not saturated or processed unlike other Nokia phones. Video is HD quality.

Speed (4/5)
The N8 is fast, but not in the league of iphone 3GS or for example a HTC Touch HD2(checked out with my friends), both of which feel lot smoother while transitioning between screens.

Connectivity (5/5)
Has it all. Quad Band GSM, 5 Band UMTS/HSDPA, PNP.

Update:
It's nice to see that people do read my blog ;)

SE Xperia X10 flies to US

Cell Phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson has announced the launch of Android-powered Xperia X10 in the US on AT&T platform. The smartphone's 8.1-megapixel camera with smile detection, face recognition, autofocus and LED flash hopes to become a major selling point. Those expecting Xperia X10 to run on latest version of Android will be dismayed as the smartphone runs Android 1.6 and so far there is no word about an update. In early May, Sony Ericsson said that it would deliver Android 2.1 to the X10 in Q4, but without 2.2 users won't be able to make use of Google's cool new android features.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 comes with a 2GB in-box microSD memory card. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 also sports a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, as well as a Timescape solution for viewing Facebook and Twitter updates, text messages and e-mails in a streamlined view. By clicking on Sony Ericsson's infinite button in Timescape, users can also bring up and view all communications from a single person in a single place. The Snapdragon processor, though initially hyped to be one of the most powerfull avalable has since lost it's position to overclocked A8 Cortex's on the Nokia n900s that have reached a friggin' 1.15GHz from the factory 600MHz. That's a bloody 90% overclock!

Anyway, the Xperia X10 will be available in black at AT&T stores in the US, authorized retailers and online from August 15 for $150 after a two-year contract agreement and minimum smartphone data plan.

Nokia N8: Fringing the n8!

Jonathan over from the Fring team demos making a 3g call with the nokia n8.

Halelujah! MNP almost here

India's telecom regulator said today (yea, again) that mobile number portability (MNP) will be implemented nationwide from October 31 (as announced earlier) ruling out any further delay (again). For those who haven't heard MNP is a service that allows a mobile user to change his operator while retaining his number - for just Rs.19.

"There will be no further delay in the implementation of MNP," Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman J S Sarma said. The Department of Telecom (DoT) said the operators must ensure that all inter-operator tests for porting the numbers from one service provider to another are completed before September 1, 2010.

The Dot made it clear to all telecoms operators that in case they fail to implement MNP as per the scheduled deadline, they will be barred from launching any new commercial services from September 1.

"It has been decided that permission to launch commercial service in any area with effect from September 1, 2010 shall be given to only those licensee(s) who are MNP compliant," said a DoT note.

State-owned telcos Bharat Sanchar Nagar Nigam Limited and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited have said they are ready with the infrastructure to implement the MNP service.

The earlier June 30 deadline for the implementation of MNP was deferred as the operators were not ready with the infrastructure to provide the service.

The MNP was to be implemented by December 31, 2009 in all the metro cities as well as in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The deadline was then changed to March 31, 2010 and thereafter to June 30, 2010.

And a Happy Independence Day to all Indians out there!

Nokia touts X2 as sffordable xpress music

Finnish cellphone maker Nokia has launched the low-priced handset X2 in the Indian market. This candybar X2 sports a 2.2-inch QVGA screen and weighs just 81 grams and still packs dual speakers, dedicated music keys, FM stereo and support for up to 16GB of storage via microSD card. Wow! Other key features include Bluetooth 2.1, 3.5mm headphone jack and USB 2.0. The phone runs on the Symbian S40 OS.

X2 also offers direct access to Facebook from the homescreen and comes with Nokia Messaging for email and Instant Messaging. Other notable feature include instant access to apps from Ovi Store, a 5 megapixel camera and a video recorder. The phone is priced at Rs 5,000 and is likely to be available from June.

There are two colour combinations available, a black/red scheme and a rather fetching silver/blue scheme that seems to work quite well. Nokia say that the X2 should be available during Q2 2010.

India: 3G coming soon to a tower near you

Mobile service providers -- Bharti Airtel, Reliance, Vodafone Essar, Tata Tele, Idea, STel and Aircel -- are getting ready to launch high-speed 3G services from next month.
Asked about the rolling out of 3G services, Sarma said, "I see no reason to believe that there would be any delay."

BSNL & MTNL has got a long lead, but we all know what happened between the tortoise and the rabbit.Hope something interesting unfolds out of this =)

Nokia C6: a video

PhoneArena reviews the Nokia C6. The C series portfolio represents the core line of Nokia phones. Devices in it can come in a variety of form factors, and range in numbering from 1 to 9, depending on the price and features. The highest-end handset in the series so far is the Nokia C6, which brings a touchscreen to the line, plus a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Nice little video!
