Space Dancer, the First Multi-Touch Game for Nokia 5800 XM

It seems that the first multi-touch application developed for the Symbian S60 5th edition operating system, or for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, has finally made it into the wild. The game, called Space Dancer, comes from a UK programmer, Jamie Fuller, and it seems to reminds us of the popular Guitar Hero console games.

The version that has been recently released is only in alpha stage, yet it is great to hear that a multi-touch application for the high-end mobile phone is already available. According to the developer, Space Dancer can be seen as a game similar to 'Guitar Hero' or 'DDR', where users have to press one or more buttons along with the music. The multi-touch system used in the game is only an experimental one, yet we should remember that up until recently it was almost impossible to run multi-touch applications on resistive touchscreen displays. Others too are working on this at the moment, and companies like Stantum are reported to also be successful in their attempts. The new game Jamie Fuller developed for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic allows users to play it in landscape mode, by tapping the title of the song on the main screen, and then pressing the corresponding onscreen buttons as the red laser approaches them.Unfortunately, the game creator says that he doesn't intend to make any further improvements to the version released now, which will be a great loss in case the title proves to be a rather popular one. Those who would like to see what the game looks like can do so by watching the video below. In case you'd like to try the game for yourselves, you can download it for free from Softpedia via this link.

Play A Foosball aka Table Soccer Game Powered By The Accelerometer

Thats right. With a flick of the wrists just like in real Foosball you wind up your player and smack the crap out of the ball. If your one of those that can't resist a foosball table then this game is for you. I have a few friends that are Foosball junkies. Two students from the University of Applied Sciences in Austria are behind this project.
Benjamin Gmeiner and Yen-Chia Lin are developing a table soccer game that uses the accelerometer in S60 phones like the N82 and N95 to control the players. This is a watered down version of the popular game which is just two against one, two players and a goalie. Holding the phone in landscape, tilt left and right moves the player across the table and rotating the phone towards you and away will wind up and shoot the ball.
I found this yesterday over at the Forum Nokia Blogs where developers hang out and share what their working on. This application is developed with the Python language and I'm finding that Python is the easiest code to work with for developing applications and games for S60. I have a small application in mind that I think I'm gonna try. Keep in mind however this game is still under development and in beta phase. You can install it on your phone and see what they have so far.
For now head over the the article where you can read more about this game and find the download link. Make sure you have the latest version of Python installed.Foos your heart out!

Picodrive For 3rd Edition

Picodrive is a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive emulator. Here is the first release of Picodrive for 3rd edition. It’s almost the same 0.50 that’s available for S60 2nd edition, but lacking some improvements

This is still a alpha version, and there’re problems to be fixed, like the alternate renderer. But it’s quite good for a first release.

Should work with all 3rd edition phones. If it doesn’t work with some game, try changing emulator settings

-For a better performance, go to “Configure screen” and choose “portrait” mode. Also disable the three sound chips in “Configure sound”

-If a game doesn’t work, or music is slow, go to “Configure screen” and choose a region manually rather than using “auto”

Nokia Giving Away FIFA 08 Ngage Licenses, Bravo

You’ve read the news already, Nokia has worked up a deal with EA Sports in some countries to hand out some massive amount of license keys for the FIFA ‘08 soccer (futbal/football) game that’s been launched in Ngage. To see if you can snag on, just head on over to the Play.N-Gage.com site and you can get an activation code sent as an SMS. AllAboutSymbian readers are reporting that it works best if you’re using Firefox, and apparently Nokia can’t determine whether they’re out of licenses, either.

In any case, I just have to say, this is a great idea, and something I hope we see more of. Nokia needs to get people using N-gage, and what better way than free license codes? My friend P@sco over at Jaspp.net has also been doing alot of gaming, specifically in the Creatures of the Deep game, and found that you can actually ‘catch’ devices. What if you could ‘catch’ license codes for various Ngage games? That’d be freakin brilliant, in my opinion. Maybe a coupon for any game of your choice even?

This would be a brilliant move because it would give even more incentive to get involved with N-gage (personally, I think it’s pretty sweet already), and incentive to actually play, rather than just install to check it out. What other ways can you think of to give away free license codes in exchange for activity?

Mapsters Game Offers Free 6210 Navigator

The Mapsters is one of Nokia’s various marketing creations, designed to be appealing and offer an interesting way to learn about a specific product, in this case, Nokia Maps. They’re a dinosaur, a monster, and a robot that show you around Nokia Maps. Aside from the exploration aspect, they’ve also got a competition up and running over at the Mapster’s site, with the grand prize being a free Nokia 6210 Navigator.
The game is rather simple - you’ve got a simple map of the world, and a city will pop up along the bottom of the game area. Your goal is to click on the map as quick as possible, as close to where that city is actually located. Don’t be fooled, it sounds rather simple, but it’s alot harder than you’d think. You get points based on how quickly you click, as well as how close to the correct position you are.

My record is 135k, though that’s nowhere near the 268k that others have posted, so you’ll have to be pretty nimble to have a standing in this little competition. You can play here, just click on ‘Competition’ at the top of the site.

Sony Ericsson G705 Launched !!!

Sony Ericsson isn't at CTIA Fall 2008but it launched a shiny new cell phone in London. The Sony Ericsson G705 offers a hefty crop of features in a slim slider design in both black and gold.
Inside you'll find a 3.2-megapixel camera that can capture YouTube-compatible video. The high-end shooter offers a load of goodies, including a digital zoom, a flash and video light, picture blogging, and PictBridge photo printing.

Other offerings include stereo Bluetooth, a music player, an FM radio, support for Java, a speakerphone, Wi-Fi, messaging and e-mail, USB mass storage, personal organizer features, 3G (UMTS and HSDPA), an accelerometer, a full HTML browser, a voice recorder, instant messaging, phone-as-modem capability, Assisted GPS, and PC syncing. And of course, it makes calls, too.

In all, that's an impressive assortment of features, and the 262,144-color display looks top-notch. In some ways the G705 has a lot in common with the Sony Ericsson G700 and G900, which the company launched earlier this year at the GSMA World Congress. But unlike its predecessors, the G705 does not appear to have a touch screen.

As a quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) handset, the G705 should arrive in worldwide markets, the Americas included, by the first quarter of next year. Orange will get its own variant called the G705u. That will be Sony Ericsson's first phone to support UMA technology.

Sony Ericsson Launches Xperia X1 SDK

Things appear to be better for the Xperia X1. Sony Ericsson has launched the SDK for it which means software creators out there can start inventing new Windows Mobile applications for the handset.
The SDK runs on visual studio so it will be quite easy for developers to start working on new apps. Testing them won’t require an actual Xperia X1 phone since all testing can be done straight on the PC where the handset is emulated.
The SDK release should suggest an official launch closing in soon. From what we know, Sony Ericsson has confirmed a Q4 release without suggesting any actual dates.

Sony Ericsson's been having a tough time lately, but there are still plenty of fans eagerly awaiting its Xperia X1 smartphone. Well, the company released an SDK today that should mean the X1 will be available soon.
One of the impressive aspects of the X1 is its gorgeous 3-inch touch screen that will have multiple panels for quickly launching applications. Today's SDK will enable developers to create these panels for different types of applications like music, games, e-mail, and more. The SDK's free and includes things like an X1 emulator, sample code, and Microsoft Visual Studio templates.

I've yet to get a hold of this smartphone, but it looks like the right size, and I love full-sized QWERTY keyboards. There will be built-in Wi-Fi, assisted-GPS, Pocket Office, and HSDPA 3G with up to 7.2 Mbps download speeds. There also will be a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and video recording capabilities -- but I stopped caring about a phone's camera a long time ago.

NFS : Pro Street on ur N95

Need for Speed: ProStreet will take the Need for Speed series in a new direction of gameplay. Instead of an arcade style of gameplay which has dominated the series, ProStreet will focus much more on realism and move closer to, but not into, racing simulation, and still with options to use driving assistants to make driving easier and more arcade-like. Unlike its predecessors, all racing in ProStreet will take place on closed tracks, thus making it the first game in the series not animating illegal racing behaviour since Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed, hence there will not be any police in the game. Performance tuning will take up a large part of gameplay in a way that even a small adjustment of the shape of a car's body will impact its performance.
That was what wikipedia had to say about the NFS : Pro Street on your PC. The mobile version on the other hand has great graphics for a phone game and includes performance tuning too but to a limited extent. But all in all it's a great game to kill time on your morning commute or while on the subway.. just make sure you show-up for whatever you were travelling for instead staying hooked up onto the phone ;) The game features both a Quick race for gettin' the feel and a full-fledged Career mode in which you start with an old fashioned Toyota Corolla(1987 model i 'zink) and then you can earn money and upgrade to even a Nissan CT-R Prototype car or the good lookin' BMW M3 E92!!

Earn money either by winning race purses or by awesome drifting - which is easy provided u get the drift (pun intended ;) )

The tracks in the game are aplenty, and with all the Slipstreaming, "good lane" and drifting techniques to be learnt it'll keep you busy for a long time..just keep to the center of the drift bar or you could end up as road kill !

One of the good things i noted about the game is that unlike it's PC version the mobile version doesn't hog the system resources of the phone, a boon for N95 users. In fact it only takes about 7MB of RAM !

Here are some pics of the game:
The car..
The race..
The drift..

Whoops!
damn...

Why NokMote is bigger than we think!

A few days ago I'd posted here about Samir's latest 3D Accelerator based app, the NokMote. But unlike previously shown where it was basically touted to be just a menu controller, Waynder from Symbian-Freak has shown that it does a much better job in turning the phone into a game controler - similar to the Nintedo Wii.

The moment the NGage app gets released, the Mobile Gaming World is going to undergo a reveloution, with possible side-shocks hitting the likes of the Sony PSP,Nintendo GBA, and maybe even the PS3&XBoX! After all using the N95 all Ngage games are playable on TV . We are on the verge of a new era in Gaming, that's for sure!

Symbian Review

Every Symbian developer knows that the most of mobile applications for new Symbian devices have to go through the special certification, a Symbian Signing. For many small development companies this new initiative of Symbian has turned to a plaque and made the development of Symbian applications not interesting financially. Symbian market becomes to be dominated by companies, not single developers.

In this article we want to give some tips for Symbian application developers.

What does the Symbian Signing bring?

There are some benefits and some drawbacks as always.

Beneficial is this mobile software certification system first of all for the consumer. Buying the certified applications the consumer can be sure that there is a certification authority that has tested the application, so it can not crash the system or include viruses.
The main drawback is felt by the developers. They have pay more, wait unpredicted time for the certification and have to fill out many papers to pass the Symbian Signing.

Read the rest here.

Nokia Mobile Gaming - Master Plan?

Nokia is to relaunch is N-Gage gaming service in November, with an added feature that it will be compatible with all N-Series devices. With 40 million N-Series units already sold, the new service Nokia is offering represents an attractive prospect to users of Ngage and the N-Series. Devices compatible with the service will include: Nokia N73, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8GB, Nokia N93, Nokia N93i, Nokia N95 and Nokia N95 8GB.

To gain customer interest, Nokia is offering free trials of all well-known games including FIFA 08 and gamers can then chose to buy the complete title at a later date. Capcom, I-Play and EA are amongst the firms developing games for the service, with EA preparing FIFA 08, The Sims 2: Pets, Tetris and Tiger Woods PGA Tour for the format.

“With the new N-Gage experience, fans of some of our most popular franchises like FIFA or The Sims can play and stay connected with other fans. With millions of compatible Nokia devices already in the marketplace, we’re very excited to help bring quality mobile gaming expriences to the fingertips of a global audience,” said Barry Cottle, senior vice president and general manager at EA Mobile.

Nokia plans to offer games at an ultra low price of €10 (£6.78) and daily and monthly rental options will also be available - thus making it an affordable option for all gamers on the move.

If things continue like this, I predict a War to be started in the Mobile Arena. Something similar to the those being fought in the PC Gaming Market. And the first strike will probably be by NVidia onto PowerVR.
